There is ALWAYS a possibility

« on: April 27, 2011, 10:21:13 AM »

For those of you who don't pay attention to gaming news or that don't own a PS3, the PlayStation Network has been down for about a week now. Sony is saying that someone hacked into their system and shut it down, taking about 77 Million user's personal data over the last week. They're planning to re-do the entire network, so the PSN will be down for another week or so. Thats at least what Sony says.

But what was the cause of this? The PSN went down right after Portal 2 came out, so did the hackers find a back door through Steam to get into it? Whoever you are, Mr. Hacker, I hope you fall into a hole and seriously maim yourself. Then, after years of suffering from your injury, I hope you die alone in a very painful and non-exciting way.

What? I hadn't used PSN in a few months, now. I really hope my info wasn't stolen. Looks like I'm gonna need to go change my password... for everything. Is nothing sacred in this world anymore?

I hope this hacker is hunted down by a disgruntled victim.

Just goes to show, making games with multiplayer as the focus is a bad idea.

Its not necessarily a bad idea, its just a different type of genre of games, really. In today's day and age, wireless connections and the cloud are becoming all too common. This server issue just shows how important it is to have an extremely secure network, especially if you have private info like credit card information. It has been about 5 years since the PS3 was launched, so it has held its own pretty well. Just not well enough it seems.

Just an update, I heard a rumor from a friend that said that the hacker had actually been inside the network since the 17th of this month. I haven't found if this is true or not, but if it is then its not linked to the whole Steam integration with the PSN. Maybe I'm just missing a full explanation somewhere, but I'd like to know exactly what happened instead of speculation. They can't even really tell us at this point if the hacker actually grabbed credit card info or not, so just keep an eye on your bank statements.

Well, they e-mailed me today. "May have your password, blah, blah, blah, please change it..." Good thing I don't have any secure info in my account. I have never been so happy to not have purchased anything on PSN.

For those of you who do have credit card numbers in there, they payed three different credit bureaus to take extra security measures with your credit card accounts now.

Also, yes, it happened on the 17th-19th. It looks like that's a pretty good source ya got there, Omega.

This topic reminds me of a horrible joke.

Hey /v/, what do you think Sony will give out in compensation?

Credit card numbers.

I highly doubt that. Sony did say that the PSN would be up sometime this last week with basic operations, but that's been far from true. They also reported this last week that Sony Online Entertainment got hacked as well, adding another 20 million user data to the list. Things definitely aren't looking good for Sony, but apparently they're doing internal tests of the PSN to make sure everything is good to go before they put the PSN back online. We'll still have to wait about a month before we can actually start using the store, but basic online play should be available.

Sony is trying hard to kiss ass, but what else can they do? All PS3 users will get 30 days of Playstation Plus for free, as well as some free random downloads. They haven't said what they'll be giving out yet, but its better than nothing.

Just to add, Sony is starting to blame Anonymous for the intrusion, telling Congress that they were attacked by an intelligent, well organized group that left a file called Anonymous that read "We are Legion" in it. I think its bullshit, but you never know. Anonymous might have attacked the PSN before, but they're not ones to take personal information like that.

At first, I was all like, "Hell Yes!"

And then I was all like, "Hell No!"

And this is why I don't go to 4chan.
