Thought this might be a bit more appropriate then the introductions for my venture into spriting.
So after taking TheDude's advice, I took out the background and messed with it until I felt it didn't look like someone split him in half and then put him back together incorrectly.
And here it is.

You accidentally killed your outline. Sprites in that style have a gray outline that you unfortunately slapped right off of him by not adjusting the tolerance on the magic wand tool that you were advised to use. You are probably best off, for the sake of learning, drawing the outline back on it by hand.

Remember, MS Paint is the best program to make sprites in. Period.

I use/love paint.net and I disagree. I think paint is still a better spriting tool but any special tools should be specifically used via paint.net, anything else prolly should not

Paint.NET features a pixel-grid as well as an easier to handle color-mixer, layers, transparency, and the ability to zoom.

I use it for all my graphic editing needs.

I never use the grid. Just, there's something easy to control about MS Paint. Not sure what.

Well, it's hard to explain in the Mother style. Mother games have kept a very simplistic style in all of their iterations, and really don't rely on being graphically amazing, so hair is a bit different. Of course, rounding out a head is self explanatory mostly, but hair... It's hard to explain. Mother doesn't have highlights or any form of shading when people have hair, it just exists as an obviously separate thing.

Try darkening or roughening the hair, up its contrast from the skin. As of now it looks like just that, darker skin.
