So, for those of you who don't know, the Stop Online Piracy Act, aka SOPA, is a bill in congress that seeks to censor the internet to protect copyrighted material.

While simply stopping piracy would be a decent goal, the way they're going about it is horrible.  It will be the responsibility of ISPs and websites to censor and monitor their users to make sure they aren't distributing or acquiring copyrighted material illegally.  If caught, the users can be charged or punished WITHOUT A COURT CASE.  That's right, it BYPASSES DUE PROCESS OF LAW.  It's insane.

But, it's worse.  The torrenting software like bittorrent, Kazaa, and Limewire, in addition to sites like download.com and cnet which carried mp3s for illegal downloads, DRM crackers, and torrent programs... were supported, created, and distributed by Disney and CBS in addition to other large companies who are supporting and lobbying for the SOPA bill in the first place.

It's on hold. In congress, that can easily mean indefinite.

Also, before ANYONE freaks out in this thread and subjects themselves to the kind of blatant ignorance the entire internet subjects itself to, please go to this website. As you know we live in a country which has a very distinct law called the Freedom of Information Act, in which any citizen in this country can view the exact text of any bill, act, or otherwise that may or may not be inducted into law. This means that anything that COULD BE put into law can be read here for everyone to make their own INFORMED opinion about.

The blessings of liberty come with the ability to read and defend that liberty, and to make our own decisions based on what we know, and as anyone with a mind can tell, the number one problem in this country that we're facing today isn't an incompetent government trying to fuck the people over (even if that is the case), it's incompetent people LETTING an incompetent government fuck them over by believing one another instead of reading unbiased facts straight from the source.

   January 24th will see PIPA, and parts of SOPA, back before congress.  In response, Wikipedia is going to host a blackout, and Google/Youtube and Facebook are rumored to do the same (http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/English_Wikipedia_anti-SOPA_blackout).  Additionally, the LoL players may have noticed Riot Games encouraging their users to speak out against SOPA.
