So, you're actually making a game game, yes?

What language were you thinking about?  Because that would affect portability.  Of course, you also have to keep in mind how easy it is to keep track of databases of items/abilities, how easy it is to manipulate sprites, and how efficient the game's Object Orientation is.  It may also be relevant to make sure the language is stable, though good programming can counter a less stable language and allow a more flexible language to be used (i.e. Java [stable] vs C++ [flexible])

Also, you may notice many RPGs have save points set in certain locations that restore all your HP/TP/MP/PP/whatever.  This is because it's easier to save.  You grab the location, the items, and the stats, but you don't have to save current HP/etc, you just give them max when they load.
