Dear Forte,

You requested that I explain how to search a linked list for a value.  Of course, this is an easy thing to do, but I won't give you the answer, simply the means to acquire the answer.

Having a linked list, we can treat each item independently of the others, and create a recursive function.  The function should keep track of:

1 - The value we're searching for
2 - What node we're at
3 - The index of that node

Number 3 is because I assume that since we know the value is in the list, we want to return where it is.  If that's not the case, ignore that.

At each step, we want to see if the value of the node is the value we're looking for.  If it is, we return the value.  If it's not, we recursively call the function and pass it the next node ("node->next" or so).  If we find that the next node is null, we should pass back some sentinel value to indicate that the value isn't there (usually -1).

I hope that helps.  If you still can't do it, I can write a function with less than 7 lines to do it if you want.
