Yeeah. We just post random obscure things about video games - fancy theories, hidden messages, references to other things... whatever.
At the beginning of Mother 2, Buzz Buzz comes from a future devastated by Giygas. He comes back in time to find the heroes mentioned in his time that were able to beat Giygas once before, and claims Ness is this hero. It's impossible, however, that Ness could be the hero in Buzz Buzz's time, since Buzz Buzz had to come back just to tell Ness he was the hero. Buzz Buzz was actually looking for Ninten and his friends, who had beaten Giygas before, which is commonly believed and almost completely confirmed to have happened 10 years before the events of Mother 2 (You fight Giygas 10 years in the past when you fight him in Mother 2)
The seven Magypsies, Aeolia, Ionia, Phrygia, Lydia, Locria, Mixolydia, and Doria are all named after Greek city states, most of them located next to Persia. Mixolydia is possibly named after Mysidia, since she asks you to simply call her "Missy" Phrygia, the one who always sleeps, also wears a cap, most likely a sleep cap, but more significantly, a "Phrygian cap", which was most commonly worn by priestly classes in Phrygia (the place). This cap has often been used in politics to symbolize liberty.
Mother 3 is a huge Biblical allegory, with Lucas (name coming from "Lucius" - The Light) saving the world after pulling the seven needles (breaking the seven seals) which were guarded by the Magypsies (who were always accompanied by saxophone music [The seven trumpets]) and in turn, awakening the Dark Dragon (Satan) after fighting with the complete antithesis of himself.
Fun Musical facts: (Courtesy of The Red Blimp)
Quote
Something noted by most music majors playing MOTHER 3 is that the names of the Magypsies are based off of musical modes – the Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian diatonic modes. Shogo Sakai was responsible for this, as shown by an interview with Shigesato Itoi:
Interviewer: There's quite a mysterious ring to the Magypsy names, like Ionia and Phrygia.
Itoi: That was Shogo Sakai's doing. Apparently they're special musical terms.
Interviewer: Is that true for all of the Magypsies?
Itoi: Even Mixolydia.
Interviewer: Really?
Itoi: Think of it as Mr. Sakai's own play on words. Apparently, people who know a lot about music find that naming scheme intriguing.
Locria’s naming here is special because among the musical modes, the Locrian mode is the odd one out; it is based on the ‘diminished’ scale and sounds very unstable and dissonant when played, which relates to Locria’s character as being an unstable character which caused dissonance among Tazmilians. Aeolia and Ionia, named after the most well-used standard modes, also seem to be the most important Magypsies. Although each of the modes has its own 'mood', there doesn't seem to be much of a correlation between the mode's feel and each Magypsies' character. A few fans have noticed that the Mixolydian mode, which has been said to give music a 'dreamy' feel, correlates well to Mixolydia, who was first seen by Lucas and co. under the influence of mind-altering mushrooms.
And we already knew they're rather colorful people.
Quote
Each Magypsy also has its own color which corresponds to the color of the rainbow. Their color is also the color of their house. They are:
* Aeolia: Red
* Phrygia: Orange
* Lydia: Yellow
* Ionia: Green
* Mixolydia: Blue
* Locria: Indigo
* Doria: Violet
Once again, Locria’s color is significant because Indigo is considered a spectral color (what's a spectral color? if you displayed an indigo shirt, you wouldn’t be able to say specifically “That’s an indigo shirt” because you can’t differentiate between blue and indigo without having a reference). Indigo is often considered a not-color of the rainbow because of this, and is sometimes dropped from the rainbow. This is interesting because Locria ‘dropped out’ of the Magypsies for something else.

90% (exaggerated estimation) of Borderlands is a reference to other things, including:
Red Rider BB Gun
Rakkinishu
"There are some who call me...Tim"
Amongst, of course, many others.
Warcraft 3 contains easter eggs hinting to other Blizzard games. The two most obvious are the Hydralisks able to be placed in the Campaign editor and the Undead Acolytes. The Acolytes commonly say "My life for Azul" (sp), and if clicked enough times, will say "My life for Aiur! I-I mean Azul! My life for Azul!" Furthermore, clicking on units repeatedly gives many Monty Python references.
To continue the Monty Python references, Fable II has an accomplish obtainable by using a gun against a zombie soldier. By first shooting off both limbs, the head, and then killing your victim, you get the "Black Knight" achievement.

Nintendo's prime colors have always been green, yellow, red, and blue. In North America we don't really notice this because they took the four colored buttons off of the SNES pad and replaced them with the dual-tone purple. These four are also Microsoft's familiar colors.
The first generation pokemon games were Green, Yellow, Red, and Blue.
The first four Yoshi colors were Green, Yellow, Red, and Blue.
New Super Mario Bros Wii features the two toads as Yellow and Blue to accompany Mario and Luigi's green and red. Wario and Waluigi (though Waluigi is more purple) can be considered the original Yellow and Blue to counter Mario and Luigi's red and green. This is why Peach wasn't playable, not because of Miyamoto's joke about her dress, but because she isn't Yellow or Blue.
Green is the only color that hasn't been featured out of these four on the main character of a Mother game. Yellow, Blue, and Red are always on Mother's main characters.
The Triforce as a single entity is gold (Yellow). Broken down, it's Green, Red, and Blue.

In Metal Gear Solid, Revolver Olceot is a reference to the character Colonel Douglas Mortimer, played by Lee Van Cleef, who starred in "For a Few Dollars More," alongside Clint Eastwood. Ocelot is described as a fan of spaghetti Westerns (or Westerns made by Italians), and even uses the same type of revolver (Colt Single Action Army) and is even seen using a detachable stock for his SAA in Metal Gear Solid 3, as Colonel Mortimer does.
The bomber jacket worn by Major Zero in Metal Gear Solid 3 is very similar to the one worn by Steven McQueen, in "The Great Escape," a movie that Major Zero is a fan of.
Despite their code names, The Boss AKA "The Joy," is never seen smiling, and "The Sorrow," is never seen, not smiling.
During Operations Intrude N313 and F014, Snake smoked an unfiltered version of Lucky Strikes. During the Shadow Moses Incident, he smoked Moslems, designed to leave no taste or smell and almost no second-hand smoke. During the Tanker Incident, his cigarettes are still smokeless, but he changed to a brand called Hope. During Liquid Ocelot’s Insurrection, he smoked a brand called The Boss, which are lethal unfiltered hand-rolled cigarettes, with 26mg tar each.

In the first RockMan game that was released for the Gameboy, called MegaMan outside of Japan, but called RockMan World in Japan to differentiate it from the first RockMan, a new Wily unit was revealed in the form of Enker, the first of the RockMan Killer Numbers. The RockMan World series spanned five games and introduced four specially designated RockMan Killer units, one of which was later confirmed to not be a RockMan Killer at all. They were, at the time, unique to the RockMan games because their names did not end in Man, but another thing makes them very special - their weapons.
Enker: Mirror Buster
Quint (Not a RKN, but still important) Sakugarne (A pogo stick/jackhammer)
Punk: Screw Crusher
Ballade: Ballade Cracker
If you don't notice it, the second word in all of their special weapons are things you can do to a rock in order to destroy it, Sakugarne excluded in name, but in function, it still breaks rocks.

The central government building in Neo Arcadia, the perfect world where Reploids and Humans could live together in piece that X had envisioned in the ending of X5, is shaped like a cross. This building, according to concept art, towers high above all other things in Neo Arcadia, standing as a symbol of the salvation that X brought to the world.
X's cyber elf form wears a robe that bears a cross on the front, and also has a halo. It is very likely that before he sacrificed his body to retain the evil of the Dark Elf, this was his official uniform, standing as the savior of a people and elevated to a godlike status.
X's divine status is further pointed at by his final form being a Seraph, one of the highest ranks of angel. This form may or may not be limited to the copy variant, but since the original Zero story called for Copy X to be the real X, it's possible that it was planned that the real X would be able to take his Seraph form.
The cross shaped building is referred to by name in Zero 3's arranged soundtrack as Yggdrasil, the name of the world tree in Norse myth. According to some versions of the myth of the tree, the world was contained within its branches and hell lied at its roots. According to the myths, the tree of life would be poisoned and destroyed during Ragnarök, according to others, it would be the last safe haven in the entire universe. During the events of Zero 4, when Dr. Vile takes control of the space station/laser canon Ragnarök, Kraft redirects its first blast towards Yggdrasil in the center of Neo Arcadia, leaving the entire area in ruins.

In the Japanese version of Mother 1, all of the towns were named after holidays. This was changed in the official translation, and upon being asked about it, the head of the translation team claimed he thought "naming towns after holidays was silly." The largest city in Mother was called Valentine (Ellay in the English version). It lies all the way to the east on the map, the only places farther away being Snowman and Reindeer. Upon entering the city there is a man who welcomes you to the city by telling you "Welcome to Valentine, the city that everyone wants to go to but no one wants to live in." When you consider it's geographical location, along with its general atmosphere, Valentine was a reference to New York, a large city that many people want to visit, but very few really wish to stay in.
The thing about "you" in the Mother universe is that you're God. Against all odds, you, the last person in the universe, the strongest thing Paula could pray to, were who killed Giygas, the very embodiment of hate. At about this time, Porky had probably figured that there was an outside force helping his enemies, something bigger than him, something unstoppable. So in the time that you, the player, weren't there, he was able to do things that you couldn't stop him from doing. When Mother 3 starts, he's trapped in that world, time travel had essentially locked him out, and that's because you, the God of that universe, master of everything in it, had prohibited him from traveling through time again. The boat ride through the memories is another instance of Porky acknowledging your existence, showing you those things from your past just to spite you. With his time travel, Porky considered himself on your level, and ultimately, putting himself in the absolutely safe capsule was a way for him to protect himself not from people, but from the true God of his universe.

AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO CARES ABOUT THIS THREAD?
Fine.
See this man? This is Nathan Bedford Forrest, the KKK's first Grand Wizard.
See this man? This is Mr. Carpainter, the first and only leader of the Happy Happyist Cult. It's pretty common knowledge that the people who wanted to paint the world blue and the people who wanted to make the world white had a few things in common, but if that just wasn't enough for you, here you go.
It's interesting to note that Forrest was a confederate soldier, meaning that during the war his uniform was gray, while Carpainter believes blue is the key to happiness, blue being the uniform color of the Union Army.

In Pokémon Diamond, Spiritomb's entry states that it was formed from 108 spirits, Spiritomb's number in the Sinnoh Pokédex is 108, its Defense and Special Defense base values are 108, and it weighs exactly 108.0 kilograms. It also explicitly states this in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, when it shouts "We are SPIRITOMB! We are made from a fusion of spirits! One hundred and EIGHT of them!" This is based on the number of temptations a person must overcome to reach Nirvana in Buddhism, implying that Spiritomb couldn't resist the temptations, so was bound to a stone.
Spiritomb is based on a Jibakurei, a spirit bound to a single place. It also based on a Buddhist tradition performed on New Year's Eve in Japan. A bell is rung 108 times to chase away the 108 temptations in order to achieve Nirvana.
Similarly, the provenance of Spiritomb probably arises from the Chinese novel, Water Margin, whose opening chapter begins with the release of 108 spirits. This draws heavy parallels with the release of Spiritomb, comprised of 108 spirits according to the Pokédex, from the Odd Keystone.

On a Playstation controller, the buttons are colored Blue (X), Green (Triangle), Purple (Square), and Red (Circle). While in most cases, this color scheme is somewhat ignored, Konami paid a slight homage to it in Gradius Gaiden with the four fighter jets, Vic Viper (Blue), Lord British (Red), Jade Knight (Green), and Falchion? (Purple).
In a certain Konami-made children's card game, the four ships from Gaiden have been made into monster cards that have effects which reflect their in game specialties. Of note is the ability to get "Option Tokens", which only Victory Viper XX03 and Lord British Space Fighter (along with Blue Thunder T-45, who is a completely different case) can summon. As a homage to the first game that the Vic Viper appeared in (Gradius I), if the Victory Viper card is destroyed or removed from the field, its Options will all leave the field with it. In contrast, the Lord British's Options will remain on the field if it is destroyed or removed from the field, a reference to the Lord British's first appearance in Salamader, where you had the chance to pick up your Options after dying.

If Final Fantasy VII had been released for the N64 as it was intended, it would have taken up 13 cartridges. The number 7 is generally considered a lucky number, while 13 is an unlucky number.

MegaRock's post in How Was Your Day regarding Mother 3 has made me realize that I've never posted a few other theories regarding the game.
Happy Boxes are televisions. You might think this is obvious, but a deeper look at exactly what the Happy Boxes do to people, and then at what today's television does to people will help this become quite clear. Happy Boxes are put in place by the Pig Mask Army to induce a state of mind control on the people of Tazmilly Village. Notice how this mind control is achieved: the little box does nothing but display some pretty colors and lights. It doesn't take much to keep people entertained, right? Let's look at our TVs now. What do they do for us? We watch half-baked sitcoms and laugh at jokes we probably wouldn't laugh at if it weren't for the prepackaged laugh-track encouraging us to laugh with it. Some of us might watch the news, but even then, it's just a corporately biased news broadcast, only telling us what someone with very fat pockets wants us to know, and exactly how they want us to know it. These little flashing colors are the visual representation of no real information - like the people of Tazmilly, we are being entertained with pretty lights and funky colors while the world is altered around us by people who, quite honestly, have no idea what they're doing.
And while it isn't trivia directly involving the game's story, why Mother 3 hasn't been released to the west ties in quite well with this: it's a satire. Of course, Mother 1 and 2 were parodies of western life, especially in the United States, but they were lighthearted about it. You would have to be looking really hard to find these kinds of implications in those two games. Mother 3, however, came right out and yelled it at you. You name it, if it exists as a social problem here in the United States, Mother 3 addressed it. Treatment of elders? Animal abuse? Homosexuality/transgenderism? The implications of an organized military? Yeah, got ya covered. Of course, let me be the first to say that the majority of the population of the US is too stupid to even begin to be able to read between the lines regarding these matters, but even so, given Nintendo of America's stance on trying to maintain a more innocent appearance, considering releasing such a game, especially when it had such a dark story to begin with pretty much goes against their style.
If that isn't a good enough reason, Mother 3 is a danger to western society just because of how correct it is.

Giygas was the product of rape. Yes, you read that right. When Itoi was just a child, he accidently saw part of a movie where a woman was being raped. This scarred him for life, and he drew on those memories when creating Giygas. In fact, some lines of the dialogue were taken directly from his memories of the movie, such as the line that went something like:"It hurts... why do I feel good?" Or something to that effect.
Yes, this really is f*cked up.
