You're a young lad named Toan from Norune Village. On the night of a festival in the village, some guy decided to reawaken an ancient evil. The man then proceeded to have the Dark Genie destroy half of the world, including your village. Dark Cloud is an RPG on the PS2 that has both action role-playing elements and city-building elements. Enemies are only located in dungeons (From what I've seen so far), also in these dungeons are treasure chests and floating orbs called Atla (They contain the pieces of the destroyed villages). While in the dungeons, you have three meters: Health, Weapon HP, and Thirst. All of which MUST be monitored. To summarize the combat system and dungeon crawling, think Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask (Dark Cloud even has a map and compass) but with breakable weapons and dehydration. As for you and the weapons... You can't level up (Gourd increases Thirst Meter, Fruit of Eden increases health, eating your favourite food increases Defence), weapons disappear when they break, and the only things you can level up are your weapons. Weapons have Attributes, Elements, and Enemy Effectiveness (My term for it). Attributes consist of Atk, End, Spd, and Mp. Elements are Fire, Thunder, Ice, Wind, and Holy. Enemy Effectiveness is bonus damage to an enemy of that type. On to rebuilding! Each village has people, houses, scenery, etc. that you collect from Atla in the dungeon for that village. When you speak with someone (For the second time) you can ask them how to rebuild their house (And you are now able to complete the house) and how to rebuild the village (They'll then request to have their house positioned around something or away from something). Fulfilling requests has great benefits (For instance, the Old Hag will act as storage for you) and there's a reward for completing all requests in a village.

Sounds intriguing. But, wow, follow the leader much?
Brunette Link. Huh.
However, seems pretty different from TLoZ as far as gameplay though, so sounds worth checking out. If I ever had any money, I'd buy a copy.
Also, it had a sequel. Have you played that/is it any good?

No, I haven't gotten the sequal. And I bought Dark Cloud used from GameStop for $6.00 (Not including the tax and the 10% off from the Edge Card). One thing I've noticed is that it's wrong. For instance, when you're told how to do a charge attack they say to use the Circle button. I don't know how in the hell that happened considering you only have one control layout (To attack, hit X. To do a charge attack, hold X).

Rags! Steve, the magical talking slingshot, will be so disappointed! And I swear Steve is a real weapon in the game. The game has no voice actors (Aside, of course, from the usual grunts) but he does speak. Text at the bottom of the screen while you fight enemies. I'm not sure if he's meant to be funny or annoying, but his stats were real nice.

I have the second one, and I must say, I've been meaning to take another playthrough for years now. Never tried the first one, but I assume that the whole "play them out of order, only think of how much the sequel improved on x" thing is true for this series as well.

WRONG. Okay. Let me sort a few things out because I am currently nerdraging at all of you SO HARD RIGHT NOW.
And every single one of you get a special treatment Idon'tcareifyourquestionorwhateverwasalreadyansweredaaaaugh.
@c0mp1337 - It's for PS2, not PS3, so go buy it. gogogodoitdoitdoit
~ ~ ~
@Forte - I would emphasize 3 main things about the game, not taking into consideration the plot. The dungeon maps are randomly generated, so all enemies, items, entrances, exits, and everything else I might be forgetting are usually completely different each time you re-visit. And then there's that re-building the world thing, where you decide where to place everything and it's this mini-riddle game making the towns perfect to get the reward item based on the villager's clues.
And lastly, the build-up system for the weapons. Each character has their specific type of weapon, and evolution tree of different types of weapon based on how you up-grade them all. Those were just my favorite parts of actually gameplay. The story's nifty too, and the characters are... quirky and charming. >w<
~ ~ ~
@MegaRock35 - IT'S A TURBAN NOT A... pointy... elf... hat ...yeah. Anyways, Dark Cloud 2 is also super fun (in my opinion of course). It's kept, but improved the weapon up-grading system, albeit there are only 2 characters, instead of 6. In Dark Cloud 1, however, everyone only used 1 type of weapon. In Dark Cloud 2, each character dual weilds. Though a lot of weapons carry over, there are just as many new ones included. Sadly, Steve the Slingshot is not one of them. However, one of the character acquires a robot you can control as a playable character (the other can turn into certain monsters with a similar up-grade system as weapons), and they decided to name him Steve. Later on, you can even equip him with a voicebox, and he'll talk at you. Unfortunately, the things he says aren't as awesome as what Steve the Slingshot says. OH RIGHT. AND VOICE ACTING.
The rebuilding the world thing is much more interactive in Dark Cloud 2, and instead of placing people back into their homes, you have to go out and recruit people, then place them as new residents into new houses in order to fulfill certain storyline requirements. So it's a lot more of that mini-riddle game, but with a lot more freedom and ability to be creative in how you do it. The randomly generated dungeon map, with random monsters, items, etc is aproximately the same (but everything's prettier <3).
Also, 2 new side-quest/mini-games appear in Dark Cloud 2; Fishing, which though it was included in Dark Cloud 1, they actually made it into more than just a reflex test. You can even build an aquarium and keep pet fish, feed them different bait to increase different stats, and enter them in contest against other fish. Or you can actually cook them to use them as healing items instead ("I'm sorry Mr. Spatula, but this is the
final boss
."). And then there's something called Spheda, which is basically golf. Except you're smacking little broken off pieces of reality itself back into their dimensional rifts with a stick... but it's still golf.
~ ~ ~
@Rags -
~ ~ ~
@Sepuku.exe - Personally, I wouldn't say that because Dark Cloud 2 seemed to just completely ditch a lot of the things from Dark Cloud 1. I still really love Dark Cloud 1, and I still think it's a really fun game. I might just have my nostalgia goggles turned up or something, but I'd still say Dark Cloud 1 is worth playing because it's vastly different from Dark Cloud 2. (I think.)
~ ~ ~
@chiefvsmario - CRIPES I'M SORRY I FORGOT YOU WERE MAKING THIS TOPIC. HOW DID I DO THAT?
I
ASKED
YOU TO MAKE IT.
