The household laptop is now unsafe, thanks to over 600 viruses. This is mostly just here to keep track of what DD said I should do to fix it, should I forget. Alright, so I should look into Ubuntu, a free linux-based OS for n00bs, and that should re-format it and make it usable. Anything else to add?

By rebooting the laptop after inserting the disk, it will allow you to run a "Live CD" of Ubuntu, where you try it out before installing it at all -- it'll simply run on the disk.  If you don't like it, you don't have to install it.

Ubuntu comes with Firefox, Open Office, GIMP, a Torrent client, and a number of other useful and not-so-useful programs.

It's irrelevant now. My mother has repossessed the laptop, so now none of us can use. It only takes one person to ruin things for everybody, unfortunately.
