1. Download steam (It's free and you never have to actually have a video game on it)
2. Join our steam group
3. Get in group chat.

I'll probably always be in, just to make sure people stick in it.

Oh, and we have that flashchat thing too... but if tiny little shoutbox was too resource intensive for the big bad server, flashchat might be too bad, too.

Oh and if we get suspended for resource usage without the shoutbox, that wasn't what was causing it. Just a guess, since I've had a host bitch at me about resource usage before and attribute it to the shoutbox.

Okay, Steam is already starting to piss me off. I try to join the chat, but the only thing that pops up is my friend box or whatever its called. I have no idea how to actually get into the room, seeing as Steam is already extremely obscure about it. I definitely think its a terrible idea to have an off site chat box, thats for sure.

Have you guys considered Chatango? Or even Xat for that matter? Both are free and are live, so you can put it on the forum instead of telling everyone to go to Steam to talk live. I'm sure there are other options out there that are free live chats, but there needs to be something here so I don't have to log onto Steam to have a conversation with people around here. If not, I'll be sticking with just forum talk.

I'm sorry, I operated on the assumption that Steam isn't somewhat confusing. (By the way, the only reason I considered using steam is because it makes it easier for us to play games together)

To join the steam chat:

1. visit here
2. Click on "Enter chat room" in the Actions table that is to your right.
3. ????

Actually, its not that confusing. Comp is right about that. I just got really confused because I can't do anything on Steam until I actually buy a game. It won't let me add friends or join chats at all. All I can do is join groups, which is kind of pointless if I can't do anything with it. What happened before was that I'd click the nice ol' "Join Chat" button, but it wouldn't take me anywhere. I figured it out though, and it turns out that in order for me to chat, I've got to give Steam some of my money, which isn't happening.

It looks like I'll be sticking to forum lurking. Huzzah!

I do have a free game is the thing. The support article I read said I have to actually buy a product from Steam to use those extra features. I've had Portal for some time now, which is why I have a Steam account at all. Apparently this just recently happened with an update, so it just looks like a stupid marketing move for Steam. Ah well.
